「〜になる」英語｜get・become違いとone of整理編

get / become + 形容詞は「〜になる」を表し、比較級 and 比較級や more and more は「どんどん・ますます」の変化を表します。このページでは、one of the + 最上級 + 複数名詞の形まで、例文と頻出ミスで整理します。

Book2 Lesson4 Scene2では、次の3つをセットで押さえると整理しやすくなります。

• get / become + 形容詞 … 「〜になる」という変化
• 比較級 and 比較級 / more and more + 形容詞 … 「どんどん・ますます〜になる」
• one of the + 最上級 + 複数名詞 … 「最も〜な人たち・もののうちの一つ」

1. 「〜になる」英語の基本：get / become + 形容詞

1-1. get / become + 形容詞 の意味

get + 形容詞 と become + 形容詞 は、どちらも「〜になる」という変化を表します。

• Jack is getting tall.
  ジャックはだんだん背が高くなっている。
• She is becoming more beautiful.
  彼女はますます美しくなっている。

進行形になると、「今まさに変化している途中」というニュアンスが出しやすくなります。

• is getting + 形容詞 … だんだん〜になってきている
• is becoming + 形容詞 … ますます〜になってきている

1-2. get と become の使い分け

get は日常的で変化の動きを出しやすく、become は少しかためでも自然です。まずは「どちらも『〜になる』」と押さえたうえで、例文ごとに慣れるのが安全です。

2. 比較級 and 比較級 / more and more の使い方

2-1. 「どんどん・ますます〜になる」を表す

変化の度合いが増していくときは、比較級 and 比較級 または more and more + 形容詞 を使います。

短い形容詞の場合：

• tall → taller and taller
Jack is getting taller and taller.
  ジャックはどんどん背が高くなっている。
• short → shorter and shorter
The days are getting shorter and shorter.
  日がどんどん短くなってきている。

長い形容詞の場合：

• beautiful → more and more beautiful
• interesting → more and more interesting
• difficult → more and more difficult

• The math classes became difficult.
  数学の授業が難しくなった。
• The math classes became more and more difficult.
  数学の授業がだんだん難しくなってきた。

2-2. 書き方のルール

• 短い形容詞 → A-er and A-er
  taller and taller / shorter and shorter / older and older
• 長い形容詞 → more and more + 原級
  more and more beautiful / more and more famous / more and more important

短い形容詞で more and more taller のようにしないこと、長い形容詞で beautifuler and beautifuler のようにしないことが大切です。

3. one of the の基本イメージ

3-1. one of the のあとはなぜ複数形か

one of the は「〜の中の一人・一つ」という意味です。グループの中から1つ取り出す発想なので、後ろの名詞は必ず複数形になります。

• guys
• students
• cities

たとえば、

Jack Adams is one of the tallest guys in the school.
ジャック・アダムズは、その学校で一番背が高い男の子たちのうちの一人だ。

ここでは「一番背が高いグループ」の中の一人、という意味になっています。

3-2. one of + 所有格 + 複数名詞

最上級がなくても、one of + 所有格 + 複数名詞 の形はよく使います。

• John Smith is one of my classmates.
  ジョン・スミスは私のクラスメートの一人だ。

ここでも、one of のあとは複数形という点は変わりません。

4. one of the + 最上級 + 複数名詞 の形

4-1. 典型的な形

「最も〜な人たち・もののうちの一人」と言いたいときは、one of the + 最上級 + 複数名詞 を使います。

• Jack Adams is one of the tallest guys in the school.
• Tokyo is one of the largest cities in the world.
• This book is one of the most interesting books I have ever read.

4-2. よくあるミス

• 名詞を単数にする
  ✕ one of the tallest guy
  ○ one of the tallest guys
• 最上級を落とす
  ✕ one of the tall guys
  ○ one of the tallest guys
• 比較級で止める
  ✕ one of the faster ...
  ○ one of the fastest ...

テストでは、the のあとに最上級 + 複数名詞がそろっているかを確認すると減点を防ぎやすくなります。
