there + be動詞の疑問文｜Is there / Are there の使い分け

Progress Book1 Lesson17 Scene2では、there + be動詞の疑問文を学習します。

there is / there are の文は、「〜がある」「〜がいる」を表す文です。疑問文にするときは、be動詞を前に出して Is there ～? や Are there ～? の形にします。

このページでは、Is there / Are there、過去形の Was there / Were there、疑問文で使う some と any、数や量をたずねる How many / How much まで例文で確認します。

There is / There are の復習

疑問文に入る前に、肯定文を確認します。

There is a cake on the table.
→ テーブルの上にケーキが1個あります。

There is some cake on your plate.
→ あなたのお皿の上にケーキがいくらかあります。

There is を使うか There are を使うかは、there の後ろに来る名詞で決まります。there 自体が主語なのではなく、後ろに出てくる名詞に合わせて be動詞を選びます。

• There is a cake.：cake が単数なので is
• There are some cakes.：cakes が複数なので are
• There is some cake.：cake を数えられない量として見るので is

名詞の数え方｜可算名詞と不可算名詞

there + be動詞では、後ろの名詞が単数か複数か、数えられるか数えられないかを確認することが大切です。

Countable は数えられる名詞、Uncountable は数えられない名詞です。

cake は、使い方によって数えられる場合と、量として扱う場合があります。

• a cake：ケーキ1個として数える
• some cakes：ケーキがいくつかある
• some cake：切り分けられたケーキがいくらかある

この違いによって、be動詞も変わります。

• There is a cake on the table.
• There are some cakes on the table.
• There is some cake on your plate.

Is there / Are there の疑問文

there + be動詞 の疑問文は、be動詞を there の前に出します。

There is a cake on the table.
→ Is there a cake on the table?
→ 机の上にケーキはありますか。

語順は次のようになります。

• There is ～. → Is there ～?
• There are ～. → Are there ～?

there は形式上前に出ていますが、be動詞を選ぶときは、there の後ろの名詞を見ます。

疑問文では some が any になりやすい

肯定文では some を使うことがあります。

There are some books on the desk.
→ 机の上に本が何冊かあります。

これを疑問文にすると、ふつうは some を any にします。

Are there any books on the desk?
→ 机の上に本は何冊かありますか。

ただし、be動詞は any で決まるのではありません。後ろの名詞を見て決めます。

• Are there any books?：books が複数なので are
• Is there any cake?：cake を量として見るので is
• Was there any paper?：paper は不可算なので was

過去形の疑問文｜Was there / Were there

過去の「ありましたか」「いましたか」を表すときは、be動詞を過去形にします。

• There was ～. → Was there ～?
• There were ～. → Were there ～?

Was there a park near the station?
→ 駅の近くに公園はありましたか。

Were there many students in the room?
→ その部屋に生徒はたくさんいましたか。

Was there any paper in the drawer?
→ 引き出しに紙はいくらかありましたか。

paper は数えられない名詞として扱うため、ここでは was を使います。

How many / How much の使い分け

数をたずねるときは How many、量をたずねるときは How much を使います。

How many + 複数名詞

How many students are there in your class?
→ あなたのクラスには生徒は何人いますか。

students は数えられる名詞の複数形です。そのため、How many students になります。

How much + 不可算名詞

How much money is there in the bag?
→ かばんの中にお金はいくらありますか。

money は不可算名詞です。そのため、How much money になります。

• How many players are there?：players は数えられる複数名詞
• How much money is there?：money は不可算名詞

there is / there are の疑問文をまとめて確認

まとめ｜there の後ろの名詞で be動詞を選ぶ

• there + be動詞 は「〜がある」「〜がいる」を表す
• 疑問文では be動詞を前に出して Is there ～? / Are there ～? にする
• 単数・不可算なら is / was、複数なら are / were を使う
• 疑問文では some が any になりやすい
• 数えられる名詞の数は How many、数えられない名詞の量は How much を使う

there の文では、there ではなく、後ろに出てくる名詞を確認することが大切です。単数・複数・不可算の区別を見ながら、is / are / was / were を選べるようにしていきましょう。
